Late-Night Cheap Eats in Budapest: Turkish Doner Kebab

Nothing tastes better after a long night out in Budapest than a late night kebab. You’ll find Kebabs in a lot of European cities (also called Gyros or Shawarma) but nowhere do they taste better and cost less than in Budapest. We’re talking 550 Ft (about 2 Euros) and you’ll find them on just about every major street corner. Just follow the scent of slow roasted meat wafting from to-go window.

Hungarians (and you) have the Turks to thank for this deliciously cheap invention. (Although I wouldn’t go shouting their praises in downtown Budapest, the memory of a few hundred years of Ottomon occupation still lingers. ) My favorite place for round the clock kebabs is Szeraj, located between Nyugati train station and Jaszai Mari square on the main ring road. It’s the only place in town you’ll find a line for food at 2am. A word to the wise; go ease on the csipos (spicy) sauce.

Cheap Summer Flights from Malev

I just found a  nice deal on summer flights to Hungary on the BudapestAdventure website.

They are advertising 99 Euro flights to Budapest from major European cities, and if you buy a flight + hotel you can get an extra night free. I was immediately suspicious so I ran a few searches on Malev’s website. The bad news: I never got a 99 Euro fare, just as I thought it is a nice teaser number. The good news: the fares weren’t 99 Euro they were still pretty cheap. I got roundtrip fares of 120-200 Euro from major European cities. That’s EasyJet prices with a sandwich thrown in.

The promotion ends Aug 31 so book soon. Look us up if you come to town.

Day at the Budapest Zoo

We went to the Budapest Zoo last week with our two daughters. When the sun is shining there isn’t a much better way to spend an afternoon with kids in Budapest.

Part of what makes the Budapest zoo so great is how different it is from zoos back home in the USA. We are used to standing 30 feet away behind a 15 foot high fence, but at the Budapest Zoo you get up close and personal with the animals. Sometimes too close…the thin sheet of plexiglass between my 2 year old and a tiger was a little too scary for her. Some of the  cages are a little small and run-down, but the zoo has really cleaned up since the first time I came two years ago. Restoration on the Zsolnay ceramic tiled Elephant House turned out especially well. Speaking of elephants, this was the highlight of the day for my daughter. She is still talking about when she got to feed the elephant an apple. Again, not too many zoos will let you feed the animals, and whether or not that is a good or bad thing, let’s just say the kids love it.

Other highlights include the petting zoo (where a goat chewed off my shoelace), the Giraffe House, and the flavored cotton candy. If you’re in Budapest with kids this is a must-see.
